PAUL LENDA: “How to Maintain Awareness Even While You Are Sleeping”

“Mindfulness doesn’t have to end when you go to sleep. You eventually reach a moment when you don’t seem to be sleeping at all. Your body will still rest and rejuvenate, but your mind will remain aware.”

~Paul Lenda

You probably know how helpful, and even crucial, mindfulness is to a balanced, calm, and fulfilling life.

Far beyond just something you do while sitting in lotus position with your eyes closed, mindfulness can also be done standing, walking, and lying down. You may not even get the inner calm and visionary insight you would expect from sitting in a traditional meditation posture.

It’s not practical to sit in meditation for more than a few hours a day. What do we do then, in order to stay in conscious awareness of our thoughts? You bring that mindfulness into everything you do during your waking state: mindful eating, mindful drinking, mindful driving, and any other action we experience in our daily lives.

Great! Now you have figured out that you can have continuous conscious awareness of your thoughts in the present moment during your waking life. What will happen when you go to sleep though? You will lose conscious awareness and your subconscious will take over. It seems like all hope is lost, right?

Nope!

Mindfulness doesn’t have to end when you go to sleep. Once you train yourself to maintain conscious awareness during sleep, you will only have a short period when you are in deep sleep (around 15% of the sleep cycle). Once you have developed conscious awareness, the more you train yourself, the more awake your mind feels. You eventually reach a moment when you don’t seem to be sleeping at all. Your body will still rest and rejuvenate, but your mind will remain aware.

How to Stay Mindful During Sleep

  • To start practicing staying mindful while asleep, start by lying down in your bed.
  • Close your eyes and focus on the in and out breaths right up until the moment you fall asleep.
  • Perform a sweep with your awareness over your entire body until you’re asleep.
  • As soon as you wake up, continue your simple mindfulness practices of sweeping and breathing.

Once you master this, upon waking up you will be in a state of mindfulness. You will be attentive and watchful of your thoughts as they come and go and as you go in and out of the state of total calmness, samadhi. With your conscious breathing, you will ebb and flow with the Universe itself.

What’s more, you will stop having night terrors and talking in your sleep. You will sleep and wake up peacefully without anything bothering you.

Even though you lie down in bed and go to sleep, it will be as if your mind didn’t. You will maintain alertness and attention. This is why, once you start maintaining mindfulness during sleep, you will barely ever even dream. If you do have dreams, they are exceptionally lucid, surreal, and vivid ones that don’t feel like dreams at all. Instead, they feel like significant messages or true experiences.

While you watch over your mind with conscious awareness, there doesn’t seem to be any mental processing which needs to be done that is the usual fuel for dreams. You sustain a deep presence and mindfulness within your mind.

When you wake up while being in a state of mindfulness, your mind is bright, lucid, and well-rested. You will find that you are even less irritable and bothered by whatever life may throw at you.

Since your mind stays sharp and responsive, the continuous mindfulness will allow you to examine and explore with ease. You will find it pretty easy to deal with anything that would potentially arise moment to moment.

Cultivating the Mind for Conscious Awareness

You may have previously thought that it would be impossible to have a mind at total peace and serenity while asleep. After all, dreams sometimes seem like such a mishmash of abstract symbols that create intense scenes that makes us forget we are even in those dreams (unless we are lucid while dreaming, which is a fascinating way to play with the dream world).

Once you learn to cultivate mindfulness in both waking life and during sleep, people and situations won’t disturb your peace. You will maintain your clarity of insight into all situations, no matter what they are.

If you do still find that certain situations and circumstances disturb your inner calm, that’s alright. As long as you can become aware of how you are reacting, you can take conscious control over your reactions. You can bring your awareness back to the present moment and remind yourself that whatever is happening, is impermanent and will pass.

There is a sense of empowerment when you truly realize that you have conscious control over your awareness, even in sleep. Start practicing this method every day and night and begin to notice an increase in lucidity and inner peace.

BODY MIND SOUL SPIRIT: “How You Are Affected By Your Sleep Direction”

The direction your head faces while sleeping has a strong effect on your physical and mental well-being.

The Indian Ayurvedic tradition believes that sleep positions decide the kind of energy we want coming into our life, with sleeping facing the East and South being the most beneficial.

Vishnu Purana says: “It is beneficial to lie down with the head placed eastward or southward. The man who lies down with his head placed in contrary directions becomes diseased.”

The Science

We all know that Earth has a magnetic pole stretched from north to south with the positive pole at the north and the negative pole at the south. Now, health scientists tell us that humans like many other animal species have an innate magnetic compass, with the positive pole at the head and the negative one at the feet.It is common knowledge that like poles repel and unlike poles attract not only scientific but also in social spheres. When we lay our heads on the north side, the two positive sides repel each other and there is a struggle between the two.

Earth revolves from west to east, and sun’s magnetic field enters earth from east side. This magnetic force enters our head if we lie with head on the east and exits through feet, promoting cool heads and warm feet as per the laws of magnetism and electricity. When the head is laid towards the west, cool feet and hot head. It results an unpleasant start for morning. Now we may realize why the ancient people said, that our intellect improves by east facing head.

Further studies have suggested that humans who sleep in an East-West position have far shorter REM (Rapid eye movement) sleep cycles, in which dreams occur, compared with North-South sleepers who got more REM sleep.

REM sleep is the final phase in our deep sleep cycle and it usually takes up 20-25% of the total sleep time. There are various theories about what REM is from neural pathway development to memory consolidation, but science is agreed that it is a vital function and so maximizing your amounts could help promote greater health and well being. Our sleep positions may have some beneficial effects, from increased REM sleep and energy flows to improved and regular patterns. As more research is carried out more will be known.

Impact On Health

  • Earth’s magnetic field is in North-South direction and this retards the blood flow through brain capillaries and affect the functioning of brain cells.
  • If a person doing stressful job sleeps with head facing South, he would get fresh comparatively faster and it has been noticed that the efficiency of such people has increased significantly.
  • While when a person sleeps with his head facing the north, magnetic field of the body and earth are not in harmony and this results in the disturbed blood circulation resulting in mental unrest and a disturbed sleep.
  • Due to the repulsion, You may lose 50% of your willpower and your soul power may not increase while you sleep pointing your head towards North. Your physical and mental health may suffer.
  • Since the earth has a greater magnetic force, we are always the losers, and rise in the morning with headache or heaviness.
  • When we lay our heads in the southern direction, there is mutual attraction and we wake up fit, fresh and free, unless afflicted by some illness.

Taking into consideration, the laws and fundamentals of Magnetism, South Pole is the source of positive energy while North Pole is considered to be the source of negative energy. If we sleep with our head (brain) faces the North, the tired brain gets negative energy from the North direction, it will take more time for it to revitalize and work efficiently. Also, if this continues, the constant exposure of the brain to negative energy might reduce the efficiency of the brain gradually.

JAMYE PRICE: “Being Change”

crocus-flower-buds-spring-flowers-wallpaper-crocus-1920x1200-862x539

Blessed Being, change is constant in life. It is the fact that Time marks. You see change around you and happening to you. You see that the passage of Time has an effect. Rather than change, we could say that movement is constant in Life. From the subatomic to the visible, movement is occurring infinitely.

We have said before that the movement of Time is around you and within you. It responds to you, with you, and through you. Your ability to work directly with Time relies on your ability to speak clearly with it, to speak its language, to come to an understanding. This speaking is not with words, it is with vibration. What is vibration but movement?

As you observe Time and your life on Earth, you recognize a cycle of movement and rest. You recognize that your body needs a distinct amount of rest from movement to function optimally. It is in these moments of sleep, meditation, and imagination that your biological system is in tune with the language of Time. In these moments, you are Allowing Time, you are connecting with the flow of Time so peacefully, that it nurtures instead of propels.

This state of connection—of rest, quiet, calm, and allowing—it is a moment of Conscious Peace. How often do you reach that by choice? Sleep is a great need. Without it, your functionality is noticeably difficult. You can even utilize stimulants to combat the fatigue, but eventually you must succumb to sleep or suffer rather extreme consequences. We point out the obvious to bring the non-obvious into better focus.

What about your states of meditation and imagination? How important are they? You know that with a practice of quieting the self, you reap benefits. It is actually a state of focus, it is just that these particular states of focus combat worry and anxiety. It is a time of focus within the self rather than outside of the self. These states soothe chaos or disharmony within the vibration of self, just as sleep does.

This is the key of Being Change.

As you allow your self to soothe into a conscious connection of peace with Life, you touch the beneficial and nurturing harmony, the support of Love—the passive strength of the invisible realms.

In these moments of Conscious Peace, you are becoming One with the harmony of Life, with the great force that builds worlds. You are whole, connected, and affecting great change through the passive force of Love. It is in these moments that your power to build the future increases, for you are working from the internal, rather than the quick fix of reworking the external and convincing the self into believing that because the outside has changed appearance, the inside must be different as well.

It is in these moments that you allow a connection with Love to emanate from you—into your life, and your world.

It is in this way that you are Being the Love that is causing change. You are Being Change.

This movement is not visible in the moment, but it is rearranging Life at its core, where Love resides. Perhaps in another moment, you will be called to action, but this internal harmony is your first action of change. A state of Being that allows Love to nurture change. Quiet yourself. Imagine it. Be it.

As we sit to Blast Being Change, we are opening our minds to the ease of Time flowing, for each new day and night supports change and offers improvement. We are allowing the Love of Life to soothe our fears into a Knowing that All is well. We are connecting with the vastness of Life, receiving its infinite safety as Time illuminates the path of Love. We are holding our harmony in the chaos of fearful humans that have not yet touched the beauty of their own heart. We are the calm in the storm, the safe shores that await the courageous to reach out and touch the future of Love. Blast on!
